Now that the Philadelphia 76ers are in the middle of a strong season there is talk about the team making a trade. For the past few years the only trade talk involving the 76ers had to do with getting rid of Andre Iguodala. However, the buzz now involves the 76ers making a trade for a playoff push. As a fan I think it is exciting to hear about all of the possibilities. However, I can’t think of any trade that the 76ers should make. I think the team is better off seeing how far they can go with the current roster and then figure out where to go in the offseason. This is a team that could win a couple of playoff rounds but not a championship. A trade could do more harm than good.
The 76ers have found success with defense and depth. Any trade they make is likely to change that culture. A hot name being mentioned is Monta Ellis of the Golden State Warriors. Ellis can certainly score but he plays no defense. That could wind up hurting the 76ers more than it helps them. The same can be said of almost any player the team might get in a deal. The only trade that might make an immediate impact is to bring Dwight Howard to town. But that isn’t going to happen so we shouldn’t even think about it.
The real reason to make a trade is to increase the chances of a championship. The 76ers are probably not going to win a championship barring a stunning run. They are a great story and a strong team but they are not quite ready to beat the elite of the league in a seven game series. There’s not any one move that can change that mentality. That is why the 76ers are better off of seeing what they can do with the team as it is.
Entering the season the hope was that this team could win a playoff series. That should still be the goal. Right now the 76ers have incredible chemistry and are playing fundamental basketball. I don’t think it’s a good idea to mess with that chemistry. It would be one thing if the team was close to championship form and one player would make a difference. That isn’t the case right now. The smarter move is to wait out this season and hope for the best. Once the offseason begins the 76ers can decide on what they need to do reach the ultimate goal.
