There might not be an NBA season, but that isn’t stopping the Philadelphia 76ers from making movies. The team announced that it has hired Jeff Capel to be an assistant coach if and when basketball resumes. As a 76ers fan, this is a solid addition to the coaching staff. Capel brings a lot of good experience to the 76ers. For a team with so many young pieces, he should be a great addition to the staff. Best of all, he should get along great with Doug Collins.
Capel had been an assistant coach with the Charlotte Bobcats from 2004 until the 2010-11 season. Capel was worked under some great coaches, including Larry Brown. But he also has a long tradition of coaching himself. He was a head coach at several different colleges, including Old Dominion. He also coached in the NBA Development League. That is a perfect resume for the 76ers. Capel has shown that he can work with young players, a skill that is critical for this team.
Capel also has two sons with college coaching experience. He has one son that is currently the head coach at Appalachian State. He also has another son, Jeff, that was the head coach at Oklahoma and now works at Duke. Meanwhile, Collins also has a son on the Duke coaching staff. That forms a pretty interesting connection between the two.
As an assistant coach, Capel will mostly fly under the radar. But it should be noted that he will be active in helping this team get better. In particular, he should help the stellar backcourt of Jrue Holiday and Evan Turner continue to reach their potential. He can also help instill the importance of defense in the young players. Collins has already done a great job of doing that. Capel will only help him.
In hiring Capel, the 76ers are getting all they could ask for an assistant coach. He has the right combination of experience and energy to help this team. Unfortunately, the labor situation in the NBA means it might be a long time before he gets to work with any of the players. But at least the 76ers have one less thing to worry about once league play does resume.
