76ers Without Spencer Hawes Against Hawks: A…

The Philadelphia 76ers will be without Spencer Hawes once again when they face the Atlanta Hawks on Friday, January 20. This will be the third game that Hawes misses in the second in a row. Hawes is nursing an injured Achilles and is also likely to miss the game against the Miami Heat on Saturday, January 21. Without Hawes, the 76ers will be a major disadvantage in both games. Hawes has had a great season so far and is one reason why the 76ers are off to such a hot start. The team can still win without him but it won’t be anywhere near as easy.

Hawes has been the biggest surprise on the team. From the beginning of the season he has seemed like one of the most improved players in the league. He’s making his shots and he’s grabbing rebounds at a great rate. Right now, Hawes looks like an All-Star player. Unfortunately his health has been an issue. He had to leave a couple of games and missed a full one with a strain in his lower back. Now the Achilles injury is keeping him out for another game. According to Doug Collins, Hawes is not expected to make the trip to Miami. If he does get healthy, it won’t be a big deal. But with lingering injuries that don’t seem to go away, there is going to be a lot of concern over the status of Hawes in the coming days and weeks.

The 76ers will need Elton Brand and Nikola Vucevic to fill the void left by Hawes. Vucevic can step in and start at center for the 76ers against the Hawks. He has been solid at getting rebounds and that will be critical. Meanwhile, Brand is coming off of one of his better games against the Denver Nuggets. He has to be strong inside. Otherwise, the 76ers could wind up in a lot of trouble against both Atlanta and Miami.

You never like to see injuries, especially to top players. But if the 76ers really are on track to being among the elite in the league they need to learn to win despite that. These two games are the toughest so far this season and losing Hawes doesn’t make things any easier. But for this team, the expectations are still going to be the same.

76ers-Hornets Preview

In their last visit to New Orleans, the Philadelphia 76ers closed out their
longest road trip of the season with their worst shooting performance of
2010-11.

The 76ers are one of the league’s top shooting teams as they arrive in New
Orleans for the conclusion of the franchise’s longest season-opening trip.

Philadelphia goes for its first set of back-to-back wins Wednesday night
when the Hornets try to end a three-game losing streak.

After holding the Hornets to a season-low in points and field goal
percentage (30.4) in an 88-70 home win on Dec. 12, 2010, the 76ers capped off
their eight-game trip last Jan. 3 by missing 18 of 23 from 3-point range and
shooting a season-worst 34.1 percent (30 of 88) in an 84-77 loss in New Orleans.

The 76ers (2-2), though, are making 48.3 percent of their shots – including
43.5 percent (30 for 69) from long range – as they close out their five-game
trip.

Louis Williams and Andre Iguodala are averaging a combined 37.0 points and
have hit 21 for 36 from beyond the arc, while Spencer Hawes has been outstanding
down low, totaling 12.0 points, 12.5 rebounds and 1.8 blocks per game.

The fifth-year center posted his third double-double of the season Saturday
with 14 points and 12 boards in a 107-79 victory over Golden State.

“When Spencer’s around the basket and active, great things happen,” coach
Doug Collins said following Monday’s practice. “… There’s no reason in the
world why he couldn’t be a top 10 rebounder in the league this year, and I told
him to even think about being in the top 5.”

Hawes missed the 76ers’ last game in New Orleans after straining his back in
warmups, while Iguodala was sidelined for that contest due to tendinitis in his
Achilles’ tendon.

The Hornets (2-3) have their own injury concerns as newcomer Eric Gordon has
missed the last four games with a bruised right knee, and Trevor Ariza left in
the fourth quarter of Monday’s 94-90 loss at Utah with a strained groin.

New Orleans was outscored 24-16 in the final 12 minutes.

“Losing Trevor, not having Eric and playing guys that normally wouldn’t be
in that situation was tough, and it showed down the stretch” coach Monty
Williams said.

The return of Gordon and Ariza could help a Hornets team that’s shooting
41.4 percent—17.9 percent (12 for 67) from long range.

Still, the 76ers will have to find a way to contain Jarrett Jack, who has
done a nice job at point guard after Chris Paul was traded to the Los Angeles
Clippers on Dec. 14 for Gordon, Chris Kaman and Al-Farouq Aminu.

Jack leads the Hornets with 16.5 points and 8.0 assists per game. He had
season highs with 27 and 11, respectively, on Monday after committing a
career-high eight turnovers in Sunday’s 96-80 loss at Sacramento.

“I wanted to come out and have a more positive effect than I did in the last
game, but it still wasn’t enough,” Jack said. “We’ve just got to go home, be
ready – we’ve got a Philly team that’s been playing pretty good basketball in
the beginning of the season and be ready to protect home court.”

The 76ers have lost seven of 10 regular-season road games in this series
since the Hornets relocated to New Orleans in 2002.

That’s all the news for today.

Lakers Agree to Sign Jason Kapono to One-year Deal

The Los Angeles Lakers needed an upgrade in the three-point shooting department. How does a career 43.7 percent from beyond the arch sound?

According to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports, the Lakers have reached a handshake deal to sign former Philadelphia 76ers small forward Jason Kapono(notes). Although teams technically won’t be allowed to sign players to new contracts until Friday, the NBA couldn’t have honestly expected teams to not agree to terms prior to the official end to the NBA Lockout.

The Lakers invited Kapono to the team facilities for a workout on Monday. Obviously his performance was impressive enough for them to reward him with one of their coveted roster spots.

Although Kapono’s one-year deal with the Lakers can’t officially be signed until 2 pm. EST on Friday, the two parties have come to an agreement that will have the three-point sharpshooter wearing purple and gold for at least the next half a year.

With Kapono on the roster, the Lakers will have the three-point ace that they desperately needed throughout the 2010-2011 NBA season. At season’s end, the Lakers were in the bottom half of the league in three-point percentage. Despite their impressive offensive talents, their lack of outside shooting was a huge crutch that kept them from being anything more than an above average playoff team.

Now headed back to LA to join the Lakers, Kapono should feel right at home. After growing up in the Los Angeles area, Kapono attended Artesia High School before spending his college hoops days as a UCLA Bruin. Down in Westwood with the Bruins, he made a name for himself as an outside scorer who could strike fear in a defense when he got hot.

The Lakers will be Kapono’s sixth NBA team since he entered the league in 2003 as a second-round pick for the Cleveland Cavaliers. On Friday, he will sign the contract for the NBA veteran’s minimum, which is worth approximately $1 million.

Kapono may not upgrade much else, but at least the Lakers have secured their long-ball threat for the upcoming season.

Holiday and Turner Should Be Better for 76ers: A…

The Philadelphia 76ers will open up training camp on December 9. Between now and the season opener around Christmas, there are going to be a lot of changes facing the 76ers. As a fan, I’m looking forward to seeing what Rod Thorn and Doug Collins have in mind for this team. While the 76ers definitely have room for improvement, the team is going to focus a lot on the young talent they have. One thing I want to see is the backcourt of the future take shape in the 2011-12 season. That means that Jrue Holiday(notes) and Evan Turner(notes) need to have big seasons.

Holiday is already on that track. He really played well under Collins in his second season in the league. When I watch Holiday, I see a potential superstar point guard in this league. He knows how to pick his shots and he knows how to set up the offense. I expect Holiday to take his game to the next level this season. He could be an All-Star if he stays on the track he is now. I think the 76ers expect a lot from this year and I believe he will deliver.

The progress of Turner will be a little slower. The second overall draft pick in 2010 entered the league with a lot of promise. However, it took him a long time to find his niche in Collins’s system. In fact, there are many that think he might not be there yet. Turner showed flashes of brilliance last season but also went several games without even seeing the floor. In the offseason, he spent a lot of time working on his shot. That should help him improve. I think Turner will be better but I still think he is another year away from reaching his potential.

One of the biggest reasons that the 76ers are starting to excite fans again is the combination of Holiday and Turner. The two young stars have a ton of upside and many hope they can become the best backcourt in the NBA for years to come. They won’t be there yet this season but they should be a lot better. As long as they continue to work hard and grow a little with each game, Holiday and Turner will become what 76ers fans hope they will be.

The deal is for 100 percent of the Sixers for approximately $280 million.

76ers operating as usual under coach Doug Collins

PHILADELPHIA — Amid the uncertainly that surrounds the Philadelphia 76ers [team stats], coach Doug Collins has kept some routine.

He’s also maintained his optimism.

Collins concluded a week of meetings and film sessions with his staff on Friday, and more sessions like it are planned, even as the start of the NBA season is in jeopardy because of the lockout.

Collins wants to keep operations running as usual and have the Sixers raring to go whenever a labor deal is reached.

“We should be able to hit the ground running, which is exciting,” he said by phone Friday.

Collins planned this week exactly as he did at this time last year when he started his first season coaching the Sixers. He’s taking a weekend break to travel to Durham, N.C. for a celebration of Duke basketball (his son is an assistant on the men’s team), but then it’s back for more work next week.

“We’re planning our season,” Collins said. “We’re getting together, we watched a lot of tape, watching a lot of things on film that we want to teach. We put together some practice plans. It was really to get together and start planning our training camp.”

When that starts, no one knows for certain. The Sixers would usually open camp the first week of October, but the lockout has thrown a dose of confusion into the league. The two sides return to the bargaining table Tuesday, this time with more players and owners, to try and find a way to end the league’s lockout and save the 2011-12 season.

Collins spent the summer in San Diego, enjoying a relaxing summer as a satisfying reward for an exciting first season in Philadelphia. He left the TNT broadcast booth to take over a team that won only 27 games. He led them from the draft lottery to the playoffs, where they lost a five-game series to the Miami Heat.

Without the stress of prepping for a game, he relived the fun this week over film sessions. His staff broke down the season into 90-minute highlight reels and they took an up-close look at how the Sixers shook off a slow start to playing some of their best basketball in years.

“It was really fun to go back and watch how well our guys were executing and how well they started doing things,” Collins said. “It gives us a great blueprint so that when we get started this year, it’s going to be so much different. I know the guys now. I know the things that were good to us on the floor. I know what we like to do.”

He just can’t personally pass along the rave reviews to his players. Like around the rest of the league, Collins and the rest of his staff and management are banned from communicating with his players.

Collins formed a tight bond with his team a year ago and was never afraid to become emotional around them. Sixers forward Elton Brand said in an interview last month how much he missed receiving the upbeat text messages from Collins.

Collins’ lessons on the value of teamwork made an impact. Led by Brand and Andre Iguodala, a large group of Sixers participated in team workouts last month in Los Angeles. Guard Evan Turner, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2010 draft, stayed in Philadelphia this summer and was tutored on shooting by Hall of Fame college coach Herb Magee. Other players posted on Twitter their detailed offseason workout plans.

It’s a nice way to keep updated — but it’s not the same as a personal connection.

At least the Sixers are easy to find.

NBA AM: Andre Iguodala for Monta Ellis?

That’s because they both find themselves in logjams with top ten picks that are ready to take on bigger roles. Many wonder if Stephen Curry and Ellis can co-exist in Golden State’s backcourt, just as there is concern in Philadelphia that Evan Turner won’t be able to blossom with Iguodala in the way.

That’s what makes the latest trade rumor involving these two players so interesting.

According to Ric Bucher of ESPN, the Warriors and Sixers have discussed a trade that would swap Ellis and Iguodala. Because their contracts are within 125 percent of each other, the two could be traded straight up without involving any other players.

Philadelphia would receive a shooting guard to place alongside Jrue Holiday and Evan Turner on the perimeter. They would also land an elite scorer, which they lacked last year when Elton Brand led the team in scoring with 15.6 points per game. Ellis is also two years younger than Iguodala, which means he would likely reach his prime around the same time as Philadelphia’s core.

Sources close to Iguodala have suggested that he would welcome a trade.

Golden State would add size, athleticism and give Curry another offensive weapon. They would also acquire one the top perimeter defenders in the league, which goes along with the defense-first approach that new head coach Mark Jackson pitched to management while interviewing for the job. The Warriors have also made it clear that they want to win now and expect to make the playoffs next season. Bringing in Iguodala could speed along that process.

When the Warriors hired Jerry West, he made several comments that seemed to foreshadow an Ellis trade.

“I’ve seen teams trade players that score tons of points and people say, ‘How in the world can you trade that player?’ ” West said. “Because he might score tons of points and the team doesn’t win.”

“Monta Ellis is a fierce competitor,” he later added. “He competes his fanny off every night. I love to watch him play, but to me, size helps. Size helps.”

Last season, Ellis averaged 24.4 points, 5.6 assists, 3.5 rebounds and 2.1 steals. Iguodala averaged 14.1 points, 6.3 assists, 5.8 rebounds and 1.5 steals.

While the deal is far from imminent, it’s a rumor that seems to make sense for both teams.

Warriors Hire Mark Jackson: Speaking of the Golden State Warriors, they have concluded their head coaching search and hired Mark Jackson.

This will be Jackson’s first time coaching, but he played in the NBA for 17 years. During his playing days, he was always known as a tremendous leader and his teams were successful, making the playoffs all but three times during the course of his career.

This season, Jackson has worked for ESPN and ABC as a color commentator alongside Jeff Van Gundy and Mike Breen.

“I am really elated about this opportunity and I’m looking forward to the challenge of building the Warriors into a perennial contender,” said Jackson.  “I cannot tell you how impressed I was with the organization during our meetings, beginning at the top with Joe Lacob and, of course, with Larry Riley, Bob Myers and Jerry West. I have sensed that Joe is committed to winning and building a team and a culture the right way.”

“I think we all witnessed that with some of the recent front office additions as well and some of the other positive things that have been done in recent months,” he continued. “This is an incredible opportunity and I am honored and thank God that I have been chosen to be the next coach of the Warriors. The Bay Area has always had some of the best fans in the NBA and I look forward to being a part of that incredible atmosphere at Oracle Arena, along with my wife, my kids and my church family, who are thrilled as well.”

Jackson pitched a focus on defense and displayed his leadership skills during interviews. While he doesn’t have the experience that the other finalists – Brian Shaw, Dwane Casey and Lawrence Frank – possess, he has been coached by some of the all-time greats. He played for five Hall of Fame coaches during his collegiate and professional careers: Lou Carnesecca, Lenny Wilkens, Jerry Sloan, Pat Riley and Larry Brown.

“After an extensive search and a great deal of consideration, we have come to the conclusion that Mark Jackson is the best coach for this team,” said Warriors’ General Manager Larry Riley. “He will bring a youthful and fresh approach to our team and the fact that he enjoyed a stellar playing career, where he served most of that time as the leader of some very successful teams, will prove invaluable in the long run. We were looking for a coach with leadership ability and a strong personality and believe Mark possesses those qualities. He’s very well respected in NBA circles, is a consummate professional and his knowledge and background will be an incredible asset for our team and organization.”

One of Jackson’s biggest supports has been Larry Brown, who coached the point guard in Indiana. In his book Bird Watching, Bird praised Jackson’s leadership and suggested that he had all of the qualities necessary to eventually be a head coach.

“After a couple of months it became obvious to me that our leader was Mark Jackson,” Bird wrote. “He wasn’t the most talented guy on our team, but guys responded to him. What Mark did was get these guys in the right frame of mind. He was the one who earned their respect. When he was in the huddle and said, ‘Look, we’ve got five minutes left, and we’re down by four points, let’s shut them down,’ you could see their eyes getting bigger. That was all they needed to hear, sometimes, to get them all fired up.”

“He’s the one who, if we lost a big game or something, would get everyone together and give them a talk,” he added. “It really helped the younger guys. They really reacted to it.”

Former point guards usually fare well as head coaches because they’re comfortable with leading a team and knowing where every player should be on the floor.

“We are tremendously excited about the addition of Mark Jackson as our new head coach,” said Warriors’ Owner Joe Lacob. “He epitomized leadership as a player in this league for 17 seasons and we think that characteristic – and many other positive traits – will translate very well into his coaching duties with our young team. He was a leader and a winner both on and off the floor in this league and we’re convinced that he is the right person to guide this team into the future and help us achieve the success that we are striving for as an organization.”

The Warriors have hired New Orleans Hornets assistant Mike Malone as Jackson’s top aide. This is yet another bold move by Golden State’s new ownership, but it was only a matter of time until Jackson was given the opportunity to prove himself as a head coach in the NBA.

Nowitzki Needs Some Help
: During this postseason, Dirk Nowitzki has been incredible.

He has climbed the NBA’s all-time playoff scoring list, led his team further than anyone expected and turned many people into fans of the Dallas Mavericks.

However, in Game 3, Nowitzki continued to be a one-man show. He finished with 34 points, 11 rebounds and 3 blocks in the losing effort. He scored nine straight points in the fourth quarter, but it still wasn’t enough for the Mavericks to get the win.

Even when Nowitzki is incredible, it’s clear that he needs help from his supporting cast. He’s facing a double team on most possessions, and he must be able to trust his open shooters. Through three games, that hasn’t been the case.

“Somebody else has to step up and help him on the offensive end,” Jason Kidd said during Monday’s practice. “We have to make baskets. We had some great looks that didn’t go down for us, especially late in the game. We have to continue taking those wide open looks and hopefully in Game 4 they go down for us.”

Outside of Nowitzki, Dallas shot 34 percent from the field and 31 percent from behind the arc. J.J. Barea, who went 2-8 from the field, thinks that the group’s struggles have irritated Nowitzki.

“Maybe a little,” Barea told reporters. “He’s great. He has confidence in us, he’s going to keep pulling for us and we want to help him.  He’s doing a great job of being the leader, but we have to step up too.

“In the first three games, we didn’t do that,” he continued. “I think if you see the first three rounds, we were doing that.  Everybody was helping.  That’s what got us here.  We’ll see.  We need to provide more help.”

Jason Terry, who went 5-13 from the field on Sunday, has been struggling throughout this series. He failed to score in the fourth quarters of Games 1 and 3, which is out of character for Terry, who finished with the third-highest fourth quarter scoring total in the league during the regular season. He has been disappointed with himself and understands that he must elevate his game.

“I take it to heart,” Terry said. “Obviously the success of this team is predicated in the fourth quarter with myself and Dirk being opportunistic with the basketball.  He’s had a lot of opportunity and gotten it done.  Two out of three games I have not.  He needs some help.  I’ll be there to lend him a hand the rest of the way.”

“Right now they are loading up on Dirk,” Tyson Chandler added. “They are double teaming him.  We have to do a better job of getting opportunities and making things a little easier.”

If the Mavericks can help Nowitzki, they’ll have a chance to even the series tonight. If not, the one-man show can only take them so far.
