The Philadelphia 76ers were in first place for much of the season. Then Sixers fans like myself saw the Boston Celtics climbing closer to first until they overtook us, making the Celtics our top concern. Yet we still watched the New York Knicks closely, on the off chance that they finally got stable enough to overtake the Sixers.
Now that day seems to have finally come, as the Sixers are not only further away from first place than ever – but are now stuck in third place. Both Philadelphia and New York are 29-27 as of April 9, with the Knicks winning the tiebreaker. And the Knicks are far more proud to be two games over .500 after the events of April 8, considering New York’s thrilling overtime win over the Chicago Bulls in the afternoon and the Sixers’ blowout loss to the Celtics at night.
The Knicks looked like they would have a much easier time with the Bulls than they ultimately did, jumping out to a 20 point lead in the first several minutes. But with Derrick Rose finally back, Chicago quickly cut into the lead and wound up forcing New York to come from behind late.
Yet after a season of turmoil, controversy and debate over his future in New York, Carmelo Anthony finally looked like the superstar that the Knicks almost gave up everything for. First he drained a three-pointer to send the game to overtime – then he hit another one to give the Knicks the lead for good with seconds to spare in overtime. This capped off a 43 point afternoon for Anthony, as he got the points he craves and gave the Knicks a big win to boot.
The victory got even sweeter later in the day, as the Sixers could not make any rallies to speak of against the Celtics. The 103-79 loss dropped the Sixers three games back of first place, with the former division leaders looking incapable of closing the gap. In fact, Philadelphia now has to battle just to make the playoffs, much like New York.
Yet the Knicks’ playoff quest got a boost as they slid into second place in the Atlantic, as well as the No. 7 seed in the East. Of course, all this does is put New York in line for a first round matchup with the Miami Heat instead of the Bulls – which may be more of a shame for the Knicks after this game. However, if they actually close the gap with the Celtics and win the division, they can avoid the Heat or Bulls altogether – at least in round one.
The Sixers really needed to win the division to avoid the Heat and Bulls, yet now they seem ready to settle for any kind of playoff berth. The Knicks certainly look more capable of catching the Celtics at the moment, especially after what they did to the Bulls.
However, New York can seize great momentum and then implode again at a moment’s notice – and in lue of actually winning, this seems to be the best way for Philadelphia to climb higher again.
