PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Dr. J’s sneakers will stay grounded on this trip to Philadelphia.
The 76ers are bringing some of Julius Erving’s memorabilia back home — and are hopeful Dr. J will come along for the ride.
Sixers CEO Adam Aron says the team bought 10 lots containing 18 items from the Erving auction that ended over the weekend. Aron also says he has reached out to Erving, one of the franchise’s greatest players, about joining the organization in some sort of capacity.
Erving is aware the 76ers bought merchandise from his personal collection that sold for a record $3.5 million.
The 76ers purchased items representative of his collegiate, ABA and NBA days, as well as awards that recognized Erving’s humanitarian work
The memorabilia will go on display at the Wells Fargo Center and the team’s practice facility.

The Philadelphia 76ers new owner Josh Harris has entered and will run the 26.2 mile Philadelphia Marathon on November 20, 2011. Additionally, the Sixers – one of the event sponsors – will give away a complimentary ticket to an upcoming Sixers home game to every marathon participant.
“I am truly looking forward to running the Philadelphia Marathon and have been for quite some time,” Harris said. “To join the participants – particularly those from the city of Philadelphia and its surrounding areas – as a representative of the Sixers is something that I’m proud to do.”
More than 27,000 registered participants comprising the Philadelphia Marathon’s three races (the 8K, half marathon and full marathon) will receive a voucher good for one free ticket to an upcoming Sixers game at the Wells Fargo Center during either the 2011-12 or 2012-13 season.

The NBA announced early Tuesday that its owners had unanimously approved the sale of the Philadelphia 76ers to New York-based investor Joshua Harris. Word that Harris had bid to purchase the Sixers from Comcast-Spectator broke last spring, with a deal worth a reported $280 million being reached in July.
The sale approval comes in a quite odd time for the league, as the NBA lockout has been underway for 109 days. Another team, the Atlanta Hawks, is reportedly working through the sale process, albeit on a different timeline than the Sixers. Comcast’s sale of the Sixers represents a 57 percent return on an initial investment made in 1996. The Sixers made one NBA Finals trip during that span, in Allen Iverson’s heyday.
Harris has remained out of the public eye up until now, though a press conference is expected soon. Harris’ group has said it will remain tenants of the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia (owned by Comcast-Spectator) and will remain a partner of Comcast Sports Philly, its local broadcaster.

According to a press release from Comcast-Spectacor, the group has reach an agreement to sell the Philadelphia 76ers to a group led by Joshua Harris, Co-Founder of Apollo Global Management, LLC.
The sale, which is subject to the approval of the National Basketball Association’s Board of Governors, does not include the Wells Fargo Center or the Philadelphia Flyers, but the team will remain as a tenant of the Wells Fargo Center.
“We are honored to have the opportunity to be affiliated with this storied franchise,” said Harris. “As a basketball fan who attended college in Philadelphia, and with family roots here, I have always felt a strong connection to this City and the 76ers. We look forward to helping the 76ers organization build on this past season’s accomplishments in the years ahead. The ownership group also looks forward to a long and mutually beneficial relationship with Comcast-Spectacor.”
The sale is expected to close later in 2011. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

We’ve been telling you it was coming for a while, not it looks like sale of the Philadelphia 76ers will come to pass in the next couple days.
So reports Ken Berger of CBS Sports (a report since confirmed by other sources).
Comcast-Spectacor has a deal in place to sell the Philadelphia 76ers to an investor group led by Joshua Harris of Apollo Global Management, LLC, CBSSports.com has learned….
David Blitzer of The Blackstone Group will join Harris as lead partner, according to sources familiar with the deal. Former player agent and Sacramento Kings executive Jason Levien also is part of the proposed ownership group, sources said. Apollo, which describes itself on its web site as specializing in “contrarian” investments and “distressed” assets, and Blackstone are not involved in the transaction.
While the price tag is not known for sure, Bloomberg suggested recently it would be about $280 million. Ed Snider has owned the Sixers, NHL’s Flyers (his real passion) and the Wells Fargo Center where they both play. This sale is for the Sixers only, not the building or any part of the Flyers.
Sixers fans should welcome the sale — Snider was a hockey guy who happened to own the NBA team. The new ownership group should bring a different level of passion to the table.
What do you guys think about this.
